Whatever the case may be, Sony is now joining the bandwagon and kickstarting its Android 12 update rollout with the Sony Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III. To recall, Sony launched the Xperia 1 III back in August 2021. This camera-focused smartphone was bundled with a 6.5-inch 4K display. It was powered by the Snapdragon 888 5G processor and came with Android 11 out of the box. On the other hand, the Sony Xperia 5 III was launched in April 2021. The phone had specs like a 6.1-inch 1080×2520 resolution display. It was also powered by Snapdragon 888 processor, and it was running on Android 11 OS. Finally, both the devices are picking up their first firmware update in the form of Android 12 OS. These third-generation Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III devices, along with the latest OS are also getting December 2021 security patch.
Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III are receiving the Android 12 update with build number 61.1.A.1.149
Owners of the Sony Xperia 1 III and Sony Xperia 5 III will receive this update via OTA. This Android 12 update is arriving with build number 61.1.A.1.149. Do note that the update also bumps the security patch level to December 1, 2021. So, we advise you to update your phones right away with the new firmware. Android 12 brings in a bunch of new features. This includes the new Material You theme, dynamic color support, and improved privacy focused features. There are other tweaks to enhance the user experience. Sadly, there is no device-specific Android 12 changelog available. Moreover, the OEM also hasn’t updated the kernel source repository with the Android 12 kernel sources for its 2021 flagships till now. As per XDA Developers, the dual SIM Asian models of the Xperia 1 III (model number XQ-BC72) and Xperia 5 III (model number XQ-BQ72) are the ones currently receiving this Android 12 update. Besides, the update, at present, is live for users of Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III in Russia. Due to the lack of the Android 12 update roadmap of Sony, it is difficult to tell as of now which device the Android 12 update will land next on. We expect other regions to join the bandwagon soon. In case you haven’t received the update notification on your Xperia device, you can manually check for it. Simply head over to the phone’s Settings and then tap on the Software update section. Your phone will look for a new update on its official servers. If it detects one, you will be prompted to download the update.
