According to SamMobile, who first reported this rollout, the update is available to users in various European countries, including Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, and the UK. Galaxy Z Flip 5G users in Australia and Singapore are also reportedly receiving the new SMR. You can expect the rollout to expand to more regions, including the US, in the coming weeks. As for the contents of this update, there’s not much to write. We aren’t looking forward to any new features but security fixes only. However, neither Samsung nor Google has published the updated security bulletin for December 2021 yet. We will let you know once we have details about all the vulnerabilities fixed with the new SMR.

Samsung begins rolling out the December security update

Samsung has consistently beaten every other Android OEM in releasing the latest security update to its devices for several months in a row. The company rolls out the new update even before the new month has arrived. It has done so once again. The December security patch is now rolling out publicly to the Galaxy Z Flip 5G a day before we flip (pun intended) the calendar to December. This isn’t the first time we are seeing Samsung roll out the December 2021 SMR to its devices though. Recent Android 12-based One UI 4.0 beta builds for the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, and the Galaxy S20/Note 20 series also came bundled with next month’s security patch. But the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is the first to pick up the new update with stable software. It’s now only a matter of time before other Galaxy smartphones jump on the bandwagon. Meanwhile, if you’re a Galaxy Z Flip 5G user, you can be on the lookout for this update in the coming days if you haven’t already received it. Your device should notify you of the OTA (over the air) update once it becomes available. You can also manually check for updates from the Settings app on your phone. Simply navigate to the Software update menu and tap Download and install to see if you have any OTA update pending download.
