The Korean behemoth has significantly improved its software update game in recent years. Security updates, in particular, have seen drastic improvements in terms of rollout pace. The company consistently beats other Android OEMs in releasing the new security maintenance release (SMR) to its devices first. The story has been the same this month as well. Just a few days into August, Samsung has already rolled out this month’s SMR to over a dozen of smartphone models. It is now adding a few more devices to the list: Galaxy S20, S20+, S20 Ultra, Galaxy Note 20, and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. If you recall, the Galaxy S20 FE already started receiving the latest security update a few days back, though not in the US. The rollout for the affordable Galaxy flagship could reach stateside in the coming weeks. As for other Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 phones in the US, the unlocked models are receiving the August security updates first. The new firmware versions are G98xU1UES2DUG6 and N98xU1UES2DUG1 respectively. The latest updates are unlikely to bring any new features or improvements apart from a bunch of vulnerability fixes from Google and Samsung. The new SMR contains fixes for over 40 vulnerabilities. These include two critical issues found in Android OS and eight Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items. As SamMobile notes, Samsung is preparing to introduce One UI 3.1.1 soon. The new software will likely debut on the upcoming foldables before making it into older Galaxy flagships. Both Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 phones should get it. So you’ll have to be content with just security updates for the time being. One UI 3.1.1 is expected to bring a host of new features.
