It’s a fairly simplistic rounder square widget where the current temperature takes precedence. It also shows your location, maximum and minimum temperature for the day, and precipitation. That’s about it as far as the content of the widget is concerned. But it appears to be a work in progress. The widget follows Google’s Material You design language, which brings a major aesthetic overhaul to Android 12. However, it doesn’t support Dynamic Coloring, a signature feature of Material You. The widget does seem to adapt to the system-wide dark or light theme though, but the dark theme isn’t perfect either. The report further notes that it cannot yet show weather information for multiple cities. You also can’t have the widget always show data for the same city. It apparently only shows weather information for your current location. Moreover, despite sourcing information from the same location, the temperature shown in the new Assistant weather widget doesn’t match that in the built-in “At a Glance” widget on the Pixel Launcher. So Google still seems to have a lot of work left to do. Perhaps the feature is still in development as it’s not yet rolled out officially. Once fully ready, this widget could also trickle down to devices running Android 11.

Google is finally giving some attention to the Weather app

The Weather app on Android is getting much-needed attention from Google with the arrival of Android 12. The app, which had used the same design language for years, got the Material You redesign recently, though the rollout has been a stop-start affair due to bugs. Google is now adding an Assistant weather widget as well. It needs some tuning but the company should get it ready before Android 12 hits the stable channel. Interestingly, Google had shown a pill-shaped Assistant weather widget at Google I/O earlier this year. Perhaps the company will offer multiple design choices to users so they can keep one they like the most. With the Android 12 public release coming near, we might see more of this in the coming weeks. The widget could roll out publicly with subsequent updates for the Google app for Android.
