The revelation came from a Qualcomm staging site and was first spotted by @Za_Raczke on Twitter. The name of the new chip is accompanied by a label that reads “Test 123.” This is likely a placeholder for the chipset until it is officially revealed on November 30. Meanwhile, the page is titled “Testing icon.” Going by this leak, it’s safe to assume that all chips in the lineup will bear the Snapdragon 8Gx naming scheme. It’s unclear what the “G” stands for, but we expect more info during the official unveiling. Based on the existing crop of Snapdragon chipsets, the “G” could refer to the upgraded clock speed of the built-in GPU. This is the case with chipsets like the Snapdragon 765G, as GSMArena points out. Until now, Qualcomm has been tight-lipped about the new chipset, simply calling it the “Snapdragon 8-series platform.”

Apart from the new naming scheme, the upcoming Qualcomm flagship chip would introduce a slew of new features. The chipset has appeared on benchmark databases a number of times. Last week, the Snapdragon 8Gx Gen 1 made its way to AnTuTu, scoring a whopping 1,035,020 points. By comparison, the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 could only manage 1,007,396. While these figures are undoubtedly better than most 2020/21 chipsets, it tells us that Qualcomm’s dominance in the mobile chip industry is second to none. Qualcomm’s current flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 888, could only score around 850,000. So it’s clear that the upcoming 4nm Snapdragon 8Gx Gen 1 would be a significant upgrade for the chipmaker. This SoC would feature on a long list of devices in 2022, starting with the Xiaomi 12 in December. Samsung’s Galaxy S22 lineup will also feature the new chipset, while some variants will utilize the Korean manufacturer’s in-house Exynos 2200 SoC with an AMD GPU under the hood. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Tech Summit 2021 takes place tomorrow (November 30). So we don’t have to wait too long to learn what’s new with the company’s flagship SoC.
