In a post on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo, Motorola China announced that it will launch a new phone featuring a 200-megapixel camera in July (via GSM Arena). The Lenovo-owned company didn’t share any other details about the phone, nor did it reveal the precise launch date. But it is teasing a “new benchmark for image experience” with this phone. Since there’s only one 200-megapixel smartphone camera commercially available today, we know a lot about the gigantic sensor that the so-called Motorola frontier 22 will feature. It’s Samsung’s ISOCELL HP1 launched in September last year. The 1/1.22-inch sensor has 200 million 0.64μm-sized pixels that can capture 16,384 x 12,288 resolution photos with an astonishing amount of detail. In low-light conditions, this sensor uses 2×2 pixel binning to merge four nearby pixels and capture 50-megapixel (1.28μm-sized pixels) images. If the subject is too dimly lit, it can even switch to 4×4 pixel binning for 2.56μm-sized pixels and take 12.5-megapixel stills. It also supports 2×2 pixel binning for videos. Speaking of videos, the ISOCELL HP1 is capable of recording 8K videos at 30fps (frames per second) and 4K videos at 120fps. It supports Double Super PD (phase-detection) autofocus.
The Motorola Frontier 22 will be a top-tier Android smartphone
The Motorola Frontier 22 isn’t just about the 200-megapixel camera. It’s a flagship phone with top-tier specs. The device should be powered by Qualcomm’s just-announced Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. Rumors also suggest that it will feature up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The handset will reportedly sport a 6.67-inch FHD+ curved AMOLED display with HDR10+ support and a 144Hz refresh rate. In terms of cameras, the 200-megapixel primary shooter on the back could be flanked by a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens and a 12MP telephoto camera. For selfies and video calls, there will be a 60MP sensor. The Motorola Frontier 22 will pack a 4,500mAh battery with 125W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Other highlights include stereo speakers, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC. As said earlier, Motorola will announce this phone in July. The company hasn’t revealed the precise date yet, but we should get to know that in the coming weeks. Perhaps, we are expecting more leaks about the phone before its official unveiling including its market name. We will keep you posted.
