Investing in cloud gaming seems like a major step for the company. This is especially true because Netflix isn’t the first company that comes to mind when you think about gaming. It was recently revealed that less than 1% of Netflix’s user base actually plays Netflix’s mobile games.
But, a job post might mean that Netflix is going for cloud gaming
This is still in its infancy, so details are pretty scarce at this point. Netflix recently posted a job online (via The Protocol) detailing what the company wants. According to the post, Netflix is looking for “new ways of delivering entertainment that requires real-time, ultra-low latency network transport technologies.” While the post doesn’t directly say so, not many forms of entertainment require “real-time, ultra-low latency network transport technologies” other than gaming. To top it off, the post says that the applicants will be able to “directly impact an emerging area of business.” Netflix pretty much has only two areas of business: Movies & TV and gaming, and the former is definitely not an emerging area of business. As stated before, you’ll want to take this with a grain of salt. If it is true, then the company might be able to make this work. While its mobile games aren’t hitting, who knows if the company could find success with more complex games? The main draw would be able to just load up Netflix and browse through a library of games that you can play right in the app (that’s assuming it’ll work like that). If the company is actually working on cloud gaming, then it will be a long while before we see anything come of this. We’ll have to wait and just settle with the load of Stranger Things mobile games the company offers.
