A mysterious small Google Pixel flagship is allegedly on the way
The tipster claims this phone is codenamed ‘Neila’. Unfortunately, though, that’s all the information that was revealed. He was very clear about the fact this is Google’s phone, that it’s small, and that it’s flagship-grade. Now, despite the fact this is a well-known tipster, do take this information with a grain of salt. This is the first time we’re hearing about such a device. The tipster may be right, though, of course.
The Pixel 5 was, technically, the company’s last compact flagship handset
We haven’t really seen a proper small flagship from Google in quite some time. The Pixel 5 is the latest in memory, and even though it was technically Google’s flagship at the time, it wasn’t a high-end phone. It included a mid-range chip. Last year, Google announced the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro flagships. Both of which are quite large. They feature 6.4 and 6.7-inch displays, flat and curved, respectively. The Pixel 6 is not much smaller than the Pixel 6 Pro, and the Pixel 6 Pro is huge. In less than a month, Google will unveil the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The Pixel 7 will include a 6.3-inch display this time around, and it will be smaller than the Pixel 6, but still not small by any means. Judging by this post, this mysterious ‘Neila’ device will be a proper small flagship. If we had to guess, we’d say that it will include a sub-6” display. It would be nice to see Google aim for a 5.8-inch display, the same display size included on the Pixel 4a.
If real, chances are it won’t launch this year
Unless Google, by some miracle, managed to keep this phone under wraps, and didn’t mention it back in May on purpose, it may launch alongside the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. That is highly unlikely, though. If this device truly exists, and Google plans on launching it, chances are it will arrive in 2023, perhaps alongside the company’s first foldable. We’re only guessing, of course. We’ll have to wait and see.
