The Surface Meta concept is an imaginary Galaxy Z Flip 3 competitor
The Surface Meta is envisioned to be Microsoft’s competitor in the clamshell foldable space. So, it’s supposed to compete with the Galaxy Z Flip 3. This is just a concept, though, as already mentioned, it’s not a real device. This concept does look excellent, though. It is clearly inspired by the Microsoft Surface Duo. Well, at least its outer shell is. The phone actually looks like a cross between the Z Flip 3 and Surface Duo. It has two displays, and its outer display is quite interesting. The inner display is a foldable one, and it comes with really thin bezels. A display camera hole is centered, and it’s not large, it seems. A Type-C port sits at the bottom of the phone, along with the main speaker.
It features an e-ink display on the back
On the back of the phone, next to its dual camera setup, you’ll notice an e-ink display. This is a rather interesting approach for this concept phone. It may not be a bad idea for a foldable device, to be quite honest. E-ink displays are not really consuming a lot of battery, they can be on all the time without a problem. It would be a great solution for notifications and whatnot, at least for daily use. A backlight would be needed for nighttime use. It remains to be seen if Microsoft plans to announce a clamshell foldable in the future. Well, it remains to be seen if it will announce any type of foldable, and by foldable we mean a smartphone with a foldable display. The Surface Duo was foldable, but it had two displays, with a bezel in between them. The phone did fold, but its display did not. It wasn’t foldable in the true sense of the word. The Surface Duo 2 will follow in its footsteps, it seems.
