Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will not be quite what you’d expect

At this point, there’s not too much information on this game that we can glean. What we know is that it won’t be your typical 1v1 fighting game that we’ve come to know over the past 30 years. Instead, this game will be a collectible RPG. So, you’ll be charged with the task of building up a collection of notable Mortal Kombat characters. These will be classic characters that have been introduced ever since the first game back in 1992. This will definitely be a disappointment to folks expecting to get in the ring and slug it out like in the old days. Instead, you will be doing group battles with your collected fighters. This runs far off the beaten path for Mortal Kombat fans, but we’ll have to see how it turns out. What’s special about this game is that it will be the first Mortal Kombat game with a mobile-exclusive storyline. This will, ostensibly, lead to mobile exclusive characters as well that you can collect.

Some people will have a problem with this game

So, let’s address the elephant in the room. Mortal Kombat is a legacy franchise that holds a strong nostalgia. People who grew up in the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s, recollect spending hours as a kid locked away in their room pitting Sub-Zero and Scorpion against one another and heated combat. However, Nostalgia is often in a Mortal Kombat-style fight against Progress. Nowadays, the latest trend in gaming is microtransactions. Gacha, loot crates, battle passes, etc. The fact that Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will be a collectible RPG means that there’s a chance that it could be heavily monetized. Why fight your way to earn a character when you can simply do a gacha pull or pay for a thousand crystals? Now, we have no idea if this will be a mechanic in the game, so you’ll want to take this with a grain of salt. That being said, we know that this game may be regarded as a cash grab by several people. Thus, it will face a lot of preconceived notions and prejudice when it comes out next year. A lot of people still have a bad taste in their mouths from Diablo Immortal, so it may be an uphill battle for Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.
